The Grand Egyptian Museum and The Hyatt Regency Cairo West Hotel

Join us for an incredible day on Saturday, January 23, for a Dartmouth event in Cairo at the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum, featuring talks by Susan Ackerman, the Preston H. Kelsey Professor of Religion, Emerita and Jonathan Smolin, Professor of Middle Eastern Studies and Director of the Dartmouth Initiative for Middle East Exchange (DIMEX).

The day begins with a guided tour of the Grand Egyptian Museum, led by a local expert guide, followed by time to explore the museum's galleries independently. From there, the group will travel to the Hyatt Regency Cairo West for an evening reception, followed by presentations from each speaker, and a buffet dinner.

Susan Ackerman will speak on the discovery at Wadi el-Hol, near Luxor, of inscriptions widely recognized as the oldest known alphabetic writing in the world. Jonathan Smolin will draw on his recent book, The Politics of Melodrama: The Cultural and Political Lives of Ihsan Abdel Kouddous and Gamal Abdel Nasser, to explore the cultural and political currents that shaped Egypt under Nasser.
