The Dartmouth alumni community continues to be dynamic and service-oriented thanks in large part to volunteer leaders who dedicate a remarkable amount of time and effort to all things Dartmouth. The Alumni Council recently honored six volunteers for their career achievements and their exceptional service to the College and the alumni community.

“Dartmouth is unbelievably fortunate to have so many volunteer leaders who ‘bleed Green’ and give their time so generously. Our classes, clubs, affiliated groups, admissions ambassador program, and every facet of the Dartmouth community benefit from our smart, energetic, and dedicated alums who are essential to keeping our alumni community vibrant,” says Alumni Council President Cheryl Shepard ’90.

The Alumni Council annually presents the Dartmouth College Alumni Award to a select few alumni who have demonstrated extraordinary service to Dartmouth and civic organizations in addition to their career accomplishments. The council honored four alums this year for their decades of service to Dartmouth:

  • Nelson Armstrong ’71 is a former director of the Dartmouth Office of Alumni Relations, a position he held for more than a dozen years following stints working in alumni affairs at MIT and Case Western Reserve. Early in his career, he worked with alumni from multiple decades to establish the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association. His volunteer work includes serving as an admissions ambassador, Career Network member, class officer, member of the Alumni Council and Association of Alumni, and president of the Dartmouth Club of Hampton Roads.
  • Tyrone Byrd ’73, after an injury-shortened time on the roster of the Green Bay Packers, went into corporate banking and then moved to the energy field. He worked at Texaco for a decade before founding his own oil and gas company, and today he is an energy industry consultant. As a Dartmouth volunteer, Tyrone has been an admissions ambassador, a mentor, an active member of the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association, and a member of the Alumni Council, including service as chair of the Nominating and Alumni Trustee Search Committee.
  • Crystal Crawford ’87 is a lawyer who has devoted her career to social justice. She is currently the senior director of strategic partnerships at the Weingart Foundation, a California grantmaking organization working to advance justice and equity for vulnerable communities. She previously worked at the Alliance for Children’s Rights, the California Black Women’s Health Project, the California Wellness Foundation, and the Western Center on Law and Poverty. Crystal has served on the Tucker Foundation Board of Advisors and the Rockefeller Center Board of Visitors. She has also been a member of the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association, an admissions ambassador, and a member of the Alumni Council.
  • David Dietze ’78 worked with law firms on three continents before launching the investment firm Point View Wealth Management, which he sold to Peapack-Gladstone Bank, where he serves as a managing director and senior portfolio strategist. He has served as president of the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey for 22 years, and he is current co-president of his class. David also co-chairs the 1769 Society and sits on the Dartmouth College Fund Committee and the Dartmouth Lawyers Association.

She helped establish the Bay Area chapter of Women of Dartmouth and has served as a member of the organization’s national steering committee. Jamila has also been a Reunion co-chair, class vice president, admissions ambassador, and member of the Alumni Council.
  • Katie Paxton ’11 is a real estate account manager in New York, having previously worked for an architecture firm in Boston. She has interviewed prospective students as an admissions ambassador and has volunteered with the Dartmouth College Fund.
