Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Ancient Times
Philadelphia I September 6  The Franklin Institute

Immerse yourself in an afternoon of education, conversation, and history with alumni and friends at this Dartmouth on Location event at The Franklin Institute. The evening culminates in a visit to the exhibit: The Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Ancient Times.

In November 1946, a Bedouin shepherd fell into a cave near the Dead Sea and stumbled upon one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time. Over the next 10 years, almost a thousand scrolls, miraculously preserved, were excavated from the area. Made up of Biblical, apocryphal, and sectarian manuscripts, the Dead Sea Scrolls provide insight into faith and religious practice in the ancient world. In the lecture, The Story of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Professor Susan Ackerman ’80 will share some of these insights and discuss the discovery of the Scrolls and their importance.

As the Preston H. Kelsey Professor of Religion, Susan Ackerman ’80 teaches courses that focus on the Bible and the other cultures of the biblical world. She is a specialist in the religion of ancient Israel and the religions of Israel's neighbors Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Canaan. Her publications include several articles and three books, Under Every Green Tree: Popular Religion in Sixth-Century Judah (Scholars Press, 1992); Warrior, Dancer, Seductress, Queen: Women in Judges and Biblical Israel (Doubleday, 1998); and When Heroes Love: The Ambiguity of Eros in the Stories of Gilgamesh and David (Columbia University Press, 2005). She has recently completed a draft of a new book on women and the religion of ancient Israel.
