Tony Heathcock '97
people know you as:  Tony.

where you lived first year:  Smith.

your major:  Government.

Dartmouth
person(s) who had a major influence on you, and how:  Government professors Denis Sullivan and David Kang; Nels Armstrong.

one of your most memorable Dartmouth moments:  The first time I arrived on campus and realized just how beautiful it all was.

where's home:  Good question. I'd have to say Richmond, Virginia, because of my mother. She epitomizes everything the word "home" means to me, so as long as she's living there, I'll say Richmond.

where you live now: Beijing. I've lived here on and off for about 11 years, and it's the place I'm most comfortable.

what you do for work: I'm a writer, and run a small consulting firm.

you could talk for hours about:  Philosophy.

something you learned yesterday:  The concept of animal spirits espoused by Robert Shiller, an economics professor at Yale. Basically it's about how human psychology influences the economy.

favorite spot in your home:  The bathroom.

Web site you love to go to:  www.jstor.orgwww.npr.org

biggest one-eighty of your life:  The day my son was born, and hearing him cry for the first time before he actually arrived.

trait you love about someone dear to you:  Generosity. I mean genuine generosity. Not just letting the little girl get in front of you in line or giving to the cute little boy's charity, but blindly giving of one's self because it's the right thing to do.

you've been meaning to get to it for years:  Stable exercise regimen.

historical figure who fascinates you, and why:  Socrates, because of the choices (good or bad) that he made on the basis of his moral code.

you blow off steam by:  Listening to music, watching my boys play, and, of course, ice cream!

reading on the bedside table: The book Hiroshige: Birds and Flowers.

tops on tomorrow's to-do list:  Make my 7 am flight to Hong Kong!

message you'd like to see on a billboard:  Attention all men: Standing 2 inches closer to the urinal won't kill you, but it'll make for a cleaner bathroom!
