Rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy

Climate Change and Hurricane Sandy Recovery

Join fellow alumni and professor of earth sciences Erich Osterberg to discuss the impact of climate change on storms such as Hurricane Sandy, the second costliest hurricane in United States history. Also, hear from New Jersey State Senator Tom Kean, Jr. `90 and individuals actively working on efforts to rebuild areas that were damaged by Hurricane Sandy. Osterberg plans to address questions including

  • Are hurricanes projected to become even stronger in a future warmer world?
  • Should we expect hurricanes to occur more or less frequently in the future?
  • How will sea-level rise amplify storm impacts on the Atlantic coast?

Professor Osterberg's overarching research objective is to understand the past variability, dynamics, and forcing mechanisms of Earth’s climate and glacial landscapes to determine the impact of human activities on these interrelated systems. His specialty is developing records of past climate change and pollution by analyzing the chemistry of ice cores collected from ice sheets and mountain glaciers. Last summer, he led a team that collected two 700-foot-long ice cores from a glacier in Alaska, chronicling 1,000 years of climatic history.

A professor at Dartmouth since 2009, Osterberg teaches classes including Meteorology, Elementary Oceanography, and Environmental Geology. The majority of his research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Attendees will also hear from representatives of the American Littoral Society, a coastal conservation organization founded in 1961, and Rebuilding Together, a national nonprofit that provides renovations to low-income homeowners. More information about these organizations will be available at the event.
