Join fellow alumni and professor Steve Swayne for an afternoon of education, conversation, and music at this Dartmouth on Location event at Tanglewood.
During the Sunday afternoon performance at the Koussevitzky Music Shed, music director Ludovic Morlot will conduct John Luther Adams, Mozart and Dvorák featuring violinist Pinchas Zukerman.
Professor Swayne will discuss how the works on the program come from very different eras and very different men: a concerto from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, then a precocious teenager growing up in the independent archbishopric of Salzburg; an orchestral rumination from Pulitzer Prize-winner John Luther Adams, a Mississippian who currently makes Alaska his home and nature his canvas; and from Antonín Dvorák a breakthrough symphony, whose London premiere in 1885 helped launch the Czech composer's international career. These three works challenge how sound plays with time, which will be the thread Swayne will use to weave these works together.
The Jacob H. Strauss 1922 Professor of Music at Dartmouth, Swayne teaches courses in art music from 1700 to the present day, opera, American musical theater, Russian music, and American music. He is the author of several articles and is the recipient of fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has taught at Dartmouth since 1999.
