Read all about it! This January, #1 New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult H’10 will be joining the Dartmouth Book Club for a virtual author talk about her latest novel, By Any Other Name.
Picoult received an honorary doctor of letters degree in 2010 for her masterful and already acclaimed collection of works. That list has only grown since.
You may recognize Picoult’s name from a variety of projects—her landmark novel, 19 Minutes, recently named the most banned book in the country by PEN America; her credits as co-librettist for the musical adaptations of Breathe and Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief; or, perhaps, any of her other 29 novels, including By Any Other Name.
She has been recognized with the New England Bookseller Award for Fiction, the Alex Awards from the Young Adult Library Services Association, a lifetime achievement award for mainstream fiction from the Romance Writers of America, the New Hampshire Literary Award for Outstanding Literary Merit, and the esteemed Sarah Josepha Hale Award. If those accolades were not enough, she was also recipient of the 2024 Free Speech Defender Robie Harris Author Award from the National Coalition Against Censorship.
And now, she makes her triumphant return to Dartmouth to discuss her latest work. Told in intertwining narratives, By Any Other Name follows two women—16th century Emilia Bassano and modern-day Melina Green—who, though centuries apart, must hide behind another name to make their voices heard. It is sweeping tale of ambition, courage, and desire that asks what price one is willing to pay to see their work live on—even if it means they will be forgotten.

Picoult will dive into the novel in a live author talk with Cheryl Bascomb ’82, former vice president for Alumni Relations at Dartmouth. Registrants may submit questions ahead of time or save them to ask live during the conversation. The conversation will be hosted on Zoom on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 from 12–1 p.m. ET.
Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with one of today’s most highly acclaimed fiction authors. Register now to join this exciting conversation.
Following the author talk, you can join the Dartmouth Book Club platform to continue exploring By Any Other Name with weekly discussion topics as part of our online book club community.
