10:30–11:30 a.m. Back to Class: Where are Women in the History of American Democracy (D)
Recent centennial celebrations of the 19th Amendment focused attention on the long campaign for woman suffrage, but how might we locate women in American democracy before that constitutional milestone? This talk examines the multiple ways Americans thought about the meaning of popular government and the place of women within it from the nation’s founding through its first century of elaboration and experimentation. Revisiting an earlier era's democratic anxieties and ambivalence, this talk offers some historical perspective on our own.
