10–11 a.m. Faculty Talk: Friendships in College with Dr. Janice McCabe
Dr. McCabe is an associate professor of sociology and serves as the residential house professor for Allen House. She is currently exploring how undergraduates at different types of institutions make and keep friends and how their friendship networks help and hinder their academic and social success. Her research about college students’ friendships has been featured in the press and highlighted in a 2019 NBC news piece. She will combine talking about her research with a discussion of Dartmouth’s (new to us ‘98) House system and how it helps current students.

Americans wonder about the vitality of democracy in the United States, but is there cause for alarm? After thirty years of studying and searching for answers, Director of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy Jason Barabas '93 returns to Dartmouth with a new perspective, some data-driven empirical results, and a research agenda.

In conversation with Howard Gilman ’44 Executive Director of the Hopkins Center for the Arts Mary Lou Aleskie, playwright Celeste Jennings ’18 will discuss the creation of her play Citrus, which she developed during her time as a student. Jennings will speak on her personal experience with the arts at Dartmouth, and Aleskie will look toward the future of the Hopkins Center, which is currently undergoing renovations.
