In The Myth of Religious Violence, William T. Cavanaugh argues that secular ideology is just as likely as religious ideology to foment violence. Why, then, he wonders, is there a pervasive perception that religion is the main source of violence in the modern world? Cavanaugh's claims in this provocative book will be debated in a conference that I'm organizing, to be held at Dartmouth on May 12, 2012.
