Time to go global! During my fall sabbatical in Tokyo I read Haruki Murakami’s most recent book, the fascinating and mysterious novel The Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki. I also highly recommend The Devotion of Suspect X, a mystery novel by Keigo Higashino. On the back flap peeks a Dartmouth surprise: The book was translated by Alexander O. Smith, a Dartmouth grad and big supporter of Japan studies at the College. I’m next looking forward to reading Higashino/Smith in Salvation of a Saint, and the 2014 novel, Malice. More broadly, if you’re interested in reading translated writings from other countries, check out the wonderful resource Words Without Borders. And once again, there’s a Dartmouth grad at the helm: founding editor Samantha Schnee.
