Dear Fellow Alumni,
On February 12, 2006, the Association of Alumni of Dartmouth College held a Special Meeting in Spaulding Auditorium of the Hopkins Center for the purposes of debating and voting on the following proposed amendment to the Association's constitution.
"Moved, that Article VII of the Constitution of the Association of Alumni of Dartmouth College be amended to read as follows:
The executive committee or any one percent of the voting members of the Association may, in accordance with a schedule and procedures adopted by the executive committee, file with the Secretary a proposed amendment to this constitution. The Secretary shall, pursuant to procedures adopted by the balloting committee, send to each voting member of the Association, by mail or other appropriate means, an official ballot and related material containing the proposed amendmentand such other information as shall be required by the balloting committee. The proposed amendment shall be adopted if it is approved by a two-thirds vote of all Association members who cast votes."
President Allen Collins '53 opened the meeting, provided a brief history of the amendment, and welcomed everyone in attendance to join in the discussion. Executive Committee member William Hutchinson '76 then moved the amendment, which was seconded by several people in the audience. That was followed by forty minutes of discussion, the substance of which will be posted shortly on the Alumni Relations Web site, and a vote by paper ballot.
The results of the vote were 198 in favor of the amendment versus 32 against. For passage, a three-fourths majority (173 votes in favor out of 230 votes cast) of those present and voting was required. Thus, the motion passed with a majority of 86 percent.
The executive committee would like to thank those alumni who came to the Special Meeting and participated in this important debate.
