Sex, Lies, and Theater: An Elizabethan Weekend at Blackfriars

Back by popular demand: Our weekend at the wonderful Blackfriars Playhouse, with Professor Peter Saccio leading us through Elizabethan drama at its most ingenious!

Join us in Staunton for captivating drama, enlightening theatrical scholarship, and the good company of Dartmouth friends at Blackfriars, the stunning re-creation of the first indoor theater in the English-speaking world. Our host will be Ralph Alan Cohen '67, cofounder of the American Shakespeare Center and an administrative director at Blackfriars. Choose one of three packages to best fit your schedule, or go with all three and make a weekend of it:

Your Friday evening–Saturday morning option ($125/person) includes:  Thomas Middleton's comedy A Mad World, My Masters, in which young men and women deviously and energetically pursue money and sex; preperformance talk by Professor Saccio; postperformance conversation with the actors; reception; dinner; breakfast; group critique of performance; and optional theater tour.

Your Saturday evening–Sunday morning option ($125/person) includes:  Richard III, Shakespeare’s most lurid play on English history; preperformance talk by Professor Saccio; welcome by Ralph Cohen; optional theater tour; wine tasting with Scott Elliff '75, owner of DuCard Vineyards; dinner; postperformance conversation with the actors; breakfast; and group critique of performance.

Your Sunday afternoon option ($30/person) includes: Much Ado about Nothing, Shakespeare’s most brilliant examination of the  the attraction and antagonism between men and women, and a preperformance talk by Professor Saccio and Ralph Cohen '67. 

Peter Saccio is the Leon D. Black Professor of Shakespearean Studies Emeritus at Dartmouth. He's published numerous books and articles on drama, as well as theatrical reviews, and many of his lectures are available in audio and video through The Teaching Company. Recognized frequently over the years for his commitment to teaching, Professor Saccio is the recipient of the Huntington Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching and the Dartmouth Alumni Continuing Education Award for service and dedication to lifelong learning for alumni.
