San Diego Zoo Safari Park

We invite you to make time this fall for some fun in the park with fellow Dartmouth alumni and lions, tigers, and bears. Oh my! The San Diego Zoo Safari Park provides the perfect setting for kids and adults alike to learn more about the Zoo's efforts to champion wildlife from around the globe. At the recently opened Tull Family Tiger Trail Exhibit, you will have the chance to go nose-to-nose with critically endangered Sumatran tigers, watch them swim, or play tug-of-war with one of these beautiful, powerful animals. Prepare for adventure, and be thankful for the Plexiglas!

Your Dartmouth Day at the Safari Park can begin as early as the Safari Park's opening at 9 am.  Explore on your own, then, make your way at 11:30 to the Mombasa Pavilion for a private gathering of Dartmouth alumni and families. Before lunch, meet a few zoo residents up close as their keepers discuss the animals’ behaviors and habitats. Enjoy a delicious luncheon of grilled chicken, Texas smoked beef, or black bean vegetarian patties with all the fixings. The Pavilion is wheelchair accessible* and protected from the elements.

After lunch, Jennifer Feltner '01 will give you another reason to cheer for the Dartmouth liberal arts education. A Chinese language and literature major, Jennifer transitioned to doctoral work in Ecology. Her fieldwork has taken her around the globe—from China, Turkey, and Central and South America to Florida, Colorado and California (including work with the San Diego Zoo's Institute for Conservation Research). Jennifer will relate some of her experiences with mountain lions, bears, bighorn sheep, Amazonian river dolphins, and jaguars. You can ask her about her many field skills, from dart gun and machete proficiency to taxidermy.

Both presentations will appeal to all ages of the greater Dartmouth family.
