Atlanta, Georgia
September 27
High Museum of Art

Join fellow alumni at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art for a faculty lecture on the human perception of art and a viewing of exceptional Dutch paintings, including Johannes Vermeer’s iconic “Girl with a Pearl Earring.”

This Dartmouth on Location program offers a rare American opportunity to soak in the beauty of Vermeer’s masterpiece, one of the most recognized paintings in the world and the inspiration for a best-selling book and 2003 movie of the same title. The exhibition, “Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis,” features 35 luminous works by artists including Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, and Jan Steen. On loan from The Hague’s Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis, the exhibition is traveling to only three locations in the United States, and it marks the first time “Girl with a Pearl Earring” will be seen in the Southeast.

Dartmouth senior lecturer in studio art Gerald Auten will deliver a presentation about how the human eye and brain process visual information in day-to-day living, and how visual art—and the Dutch painters—reflect those phenomena.

Auten is the director of the studio art exhibition program and teaches senior seminar as well as classes on drawing and architecture. The recipient of the Ralph Fabri Prize from the National Academy, Auten’s artwork has been exhibited in Chicago, Mexico City, New York, and Vancouver. He has taught at Dartmouth for 18 years.
