Steve Swayne
Professor of Music

Immerse yourself in an afternoon of education, conversation, and music with alumni and friends at this Dartmouth on Location event at Tanglewood. The afternoon culminates in a spectacular Tchaikovsky program with David Zinman, conductor and Yo-Yo Ma, cello.

Tchaikovsky is often thought of as the quintessential Russian composer. But this program features: an eighteenth-century Polish dance, a piece for cello modeled after both Mozart and French ballet, and the last of six symphonies that Tchaikovsky composed in emulation of the masters of the genre who lived in German-speaking lands. Dartmouth music professor Steve Swayne will explore what makes these works simultaneously Russian in our ears and heirs to musical traditions in Western and Central Europe.

A professor at Dartmouth since 1999, Swayne teaches courses in art music from 1700 to the present day, opera, American musical theater, Russian music, and American music. He is the author of several articles and is the recipient of fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
