Hippie Modernism
Minneapolis
Sunday, November 8, 2015
Walker Art Center

Join us as we revisit the American counterculture movement through the eyes of the artists, designers, architects, and filmmakers who revealed how "the times they are a-changin’," as Bob Dylan famously stated in his 1964 song.

Paul Young, associate professor of film and media studies, will be your guide as you explore the bold, funky exhibition, Hippie Modernism: The Struggle for Utopia. The exhibition features alternative living structures, immersive media environments, and experimental film. It explores a time the Walker Art Center describes as “one of the most vibrant and inventive periods” of Western history. See a review of the exhibition in Dezeen magazine.

Professor Young’s research and teaching focus on how particular uses of film affect public debates about the medium's intrinsic nature. He is the author of the book, Cinema Dreams Its Rivals: Media Fantasy Films from Radio to the Internet, and he has written articles on such topics as American naturalist fiction and video-game genres.

The program includes entrance into the exhibition, a luncheon in the Skyline Room, and Professor Young's presentation and guidance through Hippie Modernism'sfour galleries.
