Westin Grand Berlin

Alumni, students, and professor Steve Swayne will be in Berlin on October 9, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to gather at the Philharmonie to listen to Beethoven. The pre-performance gathering at the Westin Grand Berlin is complimentary for Dartmouth alumni and their guests.

Sir Simon Rattle will conduct the Berliner Philharmoniker, a storied orchestra founded in 1882, in Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 4 and 7. The Berliner Philharmoniker describes the performance as follows: “Like a ‘slender Greek maiden between two Nordic giants’ – that’s the effect Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony made on Robert Schumann. However, this maiden is anything but harmless; she repeatedly shows a biting humour. This humour becomes still greater in the almost manic verve of the Seventh Symphony.”

Steve Swayne is the Jacob H. Strauss 1922 Professor of Music at Dartmouth. He teaches courses in art music from 1700 to the present day, opera, American musical theater, Russian music, and American music. He is the author of several articles and is the recipient of fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has taught at Dartmouth since 1999.

Swayne will be completing his leadership of a Dartmouth Alumni Travel program, River Life along the Elbe in Saxony: Prague to Berlin. Dartmouth undergraduates will be in Berlin on the fall Foreign Study Program with Irene Kacandes, the Dartmouth Professor of German and Comparative Literature.
