Dartmouth in Dublin

Dartmouth in Dublin
Dublin, Ireland
Saturday, October 3, 2015
University College Dublin

Join alumni, professors, and friends for a day of engaging discussions and adventure in Ireland’s capital city. The program including dinner is complimentary for Dartmouth alumni and their guests.

The day begins with a visit to Trinity College to view the remarkable illuminated manuscript, the Book of Kells. In the afternoon, gather with leading academics and other thought leaders as they outline innovations and next steps in Irish diaspora engagement during the talk “Diaspora Engagement: Business, Philanthropy and Culture” at the Clinton Institute for American Studies at the University College Dublin (UCD). Professor Donald Pease of Dartmouth and Professor Liam Kennedy of University College Dublin will serve as the closing speakers.

After the diaspora discussion, Pease will talk about Colum McCann’s award-winning 2013 novel, TransAtlantic. Pease says, “McCann brings a vision of contemporary Ireland to life against the backdrop of 150 years of Irish-American history, and he does so by imaginatively restoring the perspectives of two famous travelers from the United States, Frederick Douglass and Senator George Mitchell.”

In addition to being one of Dartmouth’s most beloved faculty members, Donald Pease is also an expert on Theodor Geisel ’25, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss. In the spring of 2016, Professor Pease will also teach a course about the literature of the American Renaissance, for DartmouthX during its inaugural season of online courses. During dinner, Pease will discuss the enormously popular new Seuss book, What Pet Should I Get? Copies of Pease’s biography, Theodor Seuss Geisel, will be available for sale at the event.

Liam Kennedy is professor of American studies and director of the Clinton Institute for American Studies at University College Dublin. He researches and teaches widely in the fields of American culture, foreign policy and globalization.
