President, 2010–2011

Greetings to Dartmouth alumni across the country and around the world!
As I begin my term as president of the Alumni Council, I write to share with you some of my goals for the coming year.  First and foremost, I hope to maintain the quantity and quality of communications that each of you receives from your councilor and to be sure that your views are communicated back to your College through the Alumni Liaison Committee.  Second, I will do all I can to support the process that brings well-qualified candidates for the board of trustees to the alumni body for approval.  The Council's Nominating and Alumni Trustee Search Committee, ably led by Tom Daniels '82, is already hard at work on this project.

The council meets twice a year in Hanover, and the next meetings are in December 2010 and May 2011.  Each alumnus should expect to hear from his or her councilor both before and after these meetings.  The 125 councilors are charged with preparing these reports with the help of the council's Communications Committee, chaired by Sarah Jackson-Han '88.  I am very happy with the diversity, commitment, and dedication shared by the members of the council, who have been selected by their classes, graduate schools, affiliated groups, and other constituencies.

Our college has never been stronger, and its future is bright as President Kim puts his mark on it.  There are challenges, as all alumni know.  The performance of the endowment is a major concern, and one result of its recent decline has been to increase the importance of alumni giving.  While student satisfaction rates have never been higher, the College can use our assistance for admissions interviews, career networking, and support for Greek letter organizations.  I commend the work of J.B. Daukas '84 and his Committee to Support Greek Letter Organizations, whose recent report to the council can be found here.

Last month, I attended my 40th class reunion, which coincided with the graduation of my youngest child as a member of the Class of 2010.  Dartmouth has never been stronger by any measure, and has a bright future under President Kim's able leadership.  The College faces significant challenges, however, and it needs the energy and commitment of all of its alumni as never before.

For Dartmouth,
