Immerse yourself in an evening of the arts with alumni and friends at this Dartmouth on Location event in St. Paul that culminates in a performance of Pilobolus at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.
At Dartmouth in the 1970s, the collective Pilobolus innovated a collaborative, improvisational style and organization that transformed modern dance. Forty years later, Pilobolus thrives as an arts organization.
Still Moving: Pilobolus on Screen and on Stage
Professor Ruoff will talk about the process of documentary filmmaking and introduce his film, Still Moving: Pilobolus at Forty, about the Dartmouth-born dance company. The 38-minute film reveals the lifecycle of the troupe, the drama of a founder’s death, and the company’s evolution, transformation, and regeneration. After the screening, Ruoff will lead a discussion with the audience. Following the discussion, guests will enjoy a reception and the opportunity to connect with old friends and meet new ones before heading to the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts to see Pilobolus live.
A film historian and documentary filmmaker, Jeffrey Ruoff is associate professor and chair of film and media studies at Dartmouth. His anthology, Coming Soon to a Festival Near You: Programming Film Festivals, was published in 2012 by the University of St. Andrews. Ruoff’s book, An American Family: A Televised Life (2002), is the definitive study of the documentary series many consider to be the forerunner of reality television. He lives in Norwich, Vermont, with his wife and daughter.
