Gain unprecedented insight into Henri Matisse’s exceptional creativity as you explore Matisse in the Studio through a fascinating program led by John Stomberg, the Virginia Rice Kelsey 1961s Director of the Hood Museum of Art.

With explorations of five themes—“The Object Is an Actor,” “The Nude,” “The Face,” “Studio as Theatre,” and “Essential Forms”—this exibit examines the importance of Matisse’s studio collection, a treasured group of objects that the artist believed were instrumental to his practice. Many of the dozens of objects in the exhibit are being publicly shown outside of France for the very first time, including pieces from the Islamic, Asian, and African traditions that Matisse greatly admired.

Before viewing Matisse in the Studio, John Stomberg will lead a discussion on the exhibit and provide an update on the exciting expansion currently taking place at Dartmouth’s Hood Museum of Art. A reception with heavy hors d’eurves and a cash bar will follow the talk. After the reception, you will have time to view Matisse in the Studio.
