You've served in many volunteer roles for Dartmouth. Which one delighted you in some unexpected way?
In the early 1990s, I was vice chair of the Alumni Fund (now the Dartmouth College Fund) and responsible for classes up to 10 years out. This position placed me on the Will to Excel Capital Campaign Committee. From that committee and the great experience of alumni from the classes of the 50s and 60s, I learned more about fundraisng than from any other source since. There were some of the finest fundraisng minds on that committee, and I just listened and tried to absorb it all.

More than 3,000 alumni volunteer for Dartmouth in various capacities around the globe. Have any advice or tips for them?  My advice is always to go home to Hanover. The only way to really understand the Dartmouth of today is directly from today's students. If you can't make it to Hanover, seek out a current student in your town and listen to his or her stories. It's amazing how there remain so many common experiences throughout the years.

All Dartmouth alumni have favorite anecdotes about fun with pals in their student days. Can you share an anecdote from your volunteer days?  When I was on the Alumni Council, another councilor invited me to run the Velvet Rocks hiking trail one frosty morning. While I couldn't keep up with my guide's trail-running skills, especially on the downhill side, I so thoroughly enjoyed the trail that I still try to do it whenever I'm able to fit it in during my Hanover visits. Although the running-to-hiking ratio has steadily dropped over the years.

Why do you volunteer? In honor of four great years in Hanover and the friendships and relationships I've developed with so many people of Dartmouth.
