Barry, the many hours you spent tinkering in the basement of your Winnetka, Illinois, home convinced you, at a very young age, that you would be an engineer. Throughout your life you have been a passionate problem solver, combining creative thinking with a methodical attention to detail. Your college decision between Yale (your father's and one brother's alma mater) and Dartmouth (your other brother's alma mater) was even made in this manner with a lengthy list that you composed of the pros and cons of each.Lucky for us, the Thayer School of Engineering tipped the scales and you came to Hanover.

Very involved in campus activities, you rowed crew and participated in Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, the Dartmouth Outing Club and Bait and Bullet. An outdoorsman, you fondly recall days of skiing and hunting with the renowned author, Corey Ford, and his Chesapeake Bay retriever. At Thayer, you were president of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers and flourished in the team model that gives students many opportunities to work closely together on projects.

Returning to Illinois after graduation, you joined your family's business, MacLean-Fogg Lock Nut Company, which your grandfather founded in 1925.You have risen from sales engineer to president over the last 36 years, providing extraordinary leadership to this provider of engineered components to the power utility and automotive markets worldwide. MacLean-Fogg currently employs more than 4,000 people in 20 locations throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Together with your wife, Mary Ann, you are very active in your local community. In 2000 you co-founded and co-chaired the board of directors for the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago. In addition, you are a trustee of the Newberry Library, the Museum of Science and Industry, the University of Chicago Hospital and the United States Ski and Snowboard Association. You chair the board of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and serve as mayor of your Village of Mettawa. The icing on the cake? Raising your five children - Elizabeth, Margaret '87, Duncan '94 '96Th, Gillian '95 and Adrian. Now Duncan and Margaret have joined the family business to follow the MacLean tradition.

With all of these responsibilities, how could you possibly find time for Dartmouth? We suspect you have secretly engineered some system to fit more than 24 hours into each day. As a result, you have been able to volunteer as president of the Dartmouth Society of Engineers, interview prospective students and participate on a wide variety of campaign and major gifts committees. In 1990 you joined the Dartmouth College Board of Trustees serving on its Finance Committee and chairing its Facilities Committee. The final, and truly incredible evidence of your dedication, is your membership on the Thayer Board of Overseers during the last thirty-three years. In fact, when former Dean of the Thayer School, Charles Hutchinson, was asked about your tenure on the Board he was quoted as saying, "His term is for life."

One of your favorite inventors, Thomas Edison, once said, "If we all did the things we are really capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves." You, Barry, astound us with your boundless energy and accomplishments. With profound appreciation of your commitment to Dartmouth, and great admiration for your service to society, we honor you this evening with the presentation of the Dartmouth Alumni Award.
